Biggest city to ban bags, starting in 2014

Los Angeles joins a growing list of cities to ban plastic shopping bags as on option in groceries and many other stores.

City officials approved the ban Tuesday. It takes effect at large retail outlets Jan. 1. Smaller stores follow in July.

Single-use plastic sacks, and increasingly paper sacks, too, are unpopular these days because of the energy and resources consumed to make them, and because most of them end up in landfills.

Don't expect similar bans to appear any time soon in Columbus. Most officials seem to prefer optional recycling programs. You can read more about that here.
