The Columbus Destroyers are playing for the national title on Sunday, capping a Cinderella run during the AFL playoffs.
A victory would end a long drought for local sports fans. But if the team brings home the Foster Arena Bowl Trophy, it wonít be Columbusí first pro football championship. That honor belongs to the Columbus Bullies, who won the American Football League title in 1940 and 1941. (Thatís a two-peat, sports fans!)
Most of the cityís pro sports success has come on the baseball diamond. The Columbus Clippers last won the International League title in 1996, their seventh championship in two decades.
The Destroyers face the San Jose SaberCats in Arena Bowl XXI, kicking off at 3 p.m. on July 29 in New Orleans (TV coverage on ABC).
Fans can watch the game on big screens at the Dispatch Field Haus in Nationwide Arena (doors at 2:30 p.m.), and welcome home the team on Monday, July 30 (doors at 7 p.m.). Click to columbusdestroyers.com for info.
