As has been my tradition since 2001, I spent this morning perusing Pitchfork's top 50 albums of the year. They're also introducing a readers' poll this year.

Is it more of a curse to live life as "Dolly Parton's brother" or "Dolly Parton's loser brother"?

Here's a Christmas MP3 from Sufjan Stevens.

Peter Jackson will be involved with The Hobbit after all-though he won't be directing-and production is set to begin immediately.

I'm really enjoying Slate's coverage of the best music of 2007, a series of letters between Robert Christgau, Ann Powers and Jody Rosen. Christgau is great, but his boldfaced assertion that Journey sucks shows a glaring generation gap. Everybody I know knows "Don't Stop Believin'" rules.

Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien are returning to the air without writers beginning January 2. Meanwhile, David Letterman is negotiating directly with the WGA to get his writers back to work, though some AV Club commenters worry this will undermine the union's strength.

Speaking of AV Club, they posted their list of the worst movies of 2007. The Number 23 and Smokin' Aces are way too low (high?) on that list.
