Summer is basically a season-long local music celebration here in Columbus, and we at Alive fancy our CD release show tonight a good entry point into that celebration. (Next week things really get going with ComFest and all the ensuing events.)

As John Ross explains in this track-by-track rundown, our sixth local music compilation spans many styles and scenes. It's got a little something for everyone, particularly those who haven't yet explored much of what local music has to offer. Consider it a gateway drug.

To celebrate this free CD, we're throwing a free show at High Five, 1225 N. High St., featuring four of the acts on the disc. In order, look forward to the sounds of coffeehouse folk songstress Elisa Nicolas, garage rock greats Greenlawn Abbey, young emo-pop prodigies This Is My Suitcase and space-rock up-and-comers Pirate. Things get started around 9 p.m.

After the jump, some of the other fine happenings set for this weekend...

Scene staples Miranda Sound unveil their fourth and final album with what's sure to be a highly charged performance at Ravari Room, 2657 N. High St. To celebrate the self-titled swan song, the band has recruited friends Bookmobile and Jon Chinn & 1803 as opening acts. This shindig starts at 10 p.m. and likely costs $5.

Also check out our previews of concerts by Israel Vibration (tonight, Alrosa Villa) and Langhorne Slim (Saturday, Ruby Tuesday).

You might also want to tune in as the Columbus Crew takes on the star-studded LA Galaxy (10:30 p.m. Saturday, ONN) or the new British TV remake Inspector Lewis (9 p.m. Sunday, PBS). Get Smart debuts in theaters this weekend too.
