DoneWaiting reminds me that today is the five-year anniversary of Elliott Smith's suicide, Oct. 21, 2003. I was in New York that day with my college radio station, attending indie rock's big fall event, the CMJ Music Marathon. Everybody was bummed out on that first day of the festival; Smith was all anybody wanted to talk about. Ben Gibbard played a tearful rendition of Smith's "Say Yes" to close out Death Cab's set.
The DoneWaiting discussion from back then is worth reading, as is Slate's original obituary. Today, Paste remembered Smith with some prime tracks from the singer-songwriter, while Bradley's Alamanac provided an MP3 of Smith's "No Name No. 1."
