Margot & the Nuclear So & So's

This being Rocktober, there are tons of great rock shows going on this weekend. Some of them we fit into the paper, some we didn't.

You can check out our previews of sublime folkie Matt Bauer, local pop-rock vets Red Wanting Blue and top-notch garage rockers Thomas Function, all of whom are performing tonight.

Plus local rockers Red Dahlia are hanging it up after tonight's show at Carabar, 115 Parsons Ave.

Then there's Indianapolis indie folk ensemble Margot & the Nuclear So & So's (pictured), featuring Columbus' own Erik Kang. Sunday at Skully's, 1151 N. High St., they'll be playing their first Columbus show since Kang joined the band two years ago. It's an early show, with doors at 6 p.m., so be there by 8 if you want to make sure to see Margot in action. You may recall when I interviewed Kang at Lollapalooza. The Other Paper talked to Kang this week too.

That Sunday show is competing with the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise, which I previewed here. Tickets and more info at WexArts.

Also, Julie Doiron and Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) will be at Ohio Wesleyan Sunday evening. Their new album, Lost Wisdom, just got "Best New Music" status at Pitchfork.

And what about this hot Sunday show featuring DMBQ, Pit Er Pat and Guinea Worms? We weren't able to fit in a preview, but this is going to be pretty amazing too. Why must all of this goodness coincide on a Sunday evening?

Let's not forget about Saturday, though. Saturday is Agora, Couchfire Collective's semiannual celebration of local art, at Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams Ave. Besides tons of great visual work, the event features music, including the first in a series of sweet-sounding experimental collaborations between German pianist Simone Weisenfels and Deadsea guitar master/avant-power forward Adam Smith.

I'll finish up with my usual tag: The Supporters Shield-winning Columbus Crew are on TV this weekend (7:30 p.m. Saturday, ONN), and Mad Men (10 p.m. Sunday, AMC) remains the best show on TV. See you next week!
