At first, I thought Blank Dogs sounded too trebley. I also wasn't buying the hype about the mysterious Mr. Blank Dog's knack for melody. Then one night, by the glow of the MacBook screen, it clicked. Now, as evidenced by my preview of tonight's show, I am totally buying into this whole lo-fi new wave thing. The Summit, 2210 Summit St., will also play host to Woods, Naked on the Vague and hometown hero types Times New Viking. This costs $8, but with four acts this strong, it's well worth it. 10 p.m. start.
Another hot Monday night engagement comes courtesy of The Treehouse, 887 Chambers Rd., where Merge Records' very own authentic California power poppers, The Broken West, will headline. Flotation Walls is on the bill too, and though they get but a minor mention in my preview, their set is bound to be at least 25 percent more of a spectacle than those laid-back Los Angeleans. This one also costs $8, and doors open at 9 p.m.
