Today we pay tribute to Josiah "Joe" Diamond, the legendary jazz saxophonist who died in a car crash Monday at the age of 80. I can't claim much knowledge about the local great, but I liked his 1982 album Ornithology enough to rank it on our list of the best Columbus albums of the past 30 years. For much more info, turn to Jim Woods' story from The Dispatch.
If you want to hear stories about Diamond, head to Dick's Den tonight. The jazz hangout, located at 2417 N. High St., hosted Diamond's quartet twice a month. Columbus musician about town Derek DiCenzo will be doing one of the DJ sets we love so much here at Alive, and he promises to include selections from Ornithology. Rest in peace, Mr. Diamond.
