This post is birthed straight from jealousy: Chris DeVille has seen Al Green live and I have not. (Read his solid Bonnaroo coverage below.) However, I can claim to have listened very carefully -- often desperately -- to Green's music for many years.
The classic material in question always toed the line between sensual and spiritual -- often combining both into something unique, something beautiful -- and his heartfelt delivery and status as a reverend lent even the most romantic song a deep, emotional substance. He might've been talking about getting down with a lady, but it never sounded dirty. This song, his best, kicks off one of the best greatest hits collections ever compiled.
