Artist: Monolithic Cloud Parade Song: "Airplanes Full of Flames"
When I saw Monolithic Cloud Parade at ComFest, I picked up a distinct Neutral Milk Hotel vibe, and it comes through loud and clear on the excellently named "Airplanes Filled with Flames." The track plays like a new wave version of "King of Carrot Flowers," the two-part epic that opens In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. The extreme debt to Jeff Mangum notwithstanding, "Airplanes" is an excellent indie rock number powered by walls of lo-fi guitar and triumphant trumpet. If they hadn't made the switch from homage to ripoff by throwing in the Mangumesque "la-da-di" part at the end, I might even bump my seal of approval from "healthy" to "hearty."
Anyway, these cats are playing not one, not two, but three shows later this week. Wednesday they'll be at Skully's, 1151 N. High St., with Lackluster, Swef and Unisoul. Thursday it's Oldfield's on High, 2590 N. High St., with Boy With Robot, Presto Descanto and DJ Self Help. And Friday they'll hit up The Treehouse, 887 Chambers Rd., with The Town Monster.
