This South African rock band's EP, Mystery, is a cauldron of sounds from our continent and theirs: ska, indie, reggae, Afro-pop and noise. Besides the smoothness and lovely instrumental breakdown, the genius of this track is that it sounds like two songs in one -- and somehow works.
The band has a really interesting take on the beautiful, musical mess they've made.
"Rock was always seen as a white thing, the music of the enemy," guitarist Mpumi Mcata told The Guardian. "When we started, we encountered a lot of hostility. Soon, though, people realised that what we were making was far more in tune with what's going on in South Africa now than any of the pop music playing on the radio."
