Artist: Karate Coyote Song: "Sails of Black"
One of the city's most buzzed-about bands of the past couple years, Karate Coyote spent the weekend tracking their first full-length at Central City Recording. They'll switch focus from the studio back to the stage Friday when they play an Autism Speaks benefit at Bar of Modern Art, 583 E. Broad St., alongside the Von Bondies, a Detroit garage band best known for getting punched in the face by Jack White.
The rest of the event info is clearly visible on the poster, so let's get back to Karate Coyote and particularly "Sails of Black," a fine selection from the group's Little Victories EP. From the song's stormy beginning, the band makes good use of its multi-vocalist arsenal to create a feeling of terror and tumult. It all coalesces into something like the B-52s backed by Built to Spill — a far more pleasant combination than I'd expect. Listen at MySpace.
