The first half of Phrazes for the Young, the new solo record from Julian Casablancas, is great. His frantic, dazed-but-insightful energy dies down later, but not before he lays down three killer tracks, "Out of the Blue" standing tall among them. It has all the best elements that make The Strokes such a great band: the conflicted emotions of "You Only Live Once," the steady rhythm of "Reptilia" and the latent, desperate hopefulness of "Someday."
