I was surprised to discover recently that not one but two local acts were attempting to post a new song online each week this year. John Mayer-ly singer-songwriter Jared Mahone is going the demo route, uploading fresh creations each week in an attempt to force himself to stay focused on the creative side of being a musician when it's all too easy to get bogged down in the business of booking and promoting shows, petitioning record labels, etc. At the end of the year, based on fan suggestions, he'll take the best of the bunch and record them all proper-like for his next LP.

This is known as The Mixtape Project. Mahone is charging a $20 subscription fee to access the songs and his extensive background notes on each track.

Read more about this in Thursday's paper, and if you dig Mahone, head to see him Friday night at the "Local Live Mixtape Show" at Skully's, 1151 N. High St., with Andy Shaw Band and The Wet Darlings.
