Growing up surrounded by classic soul and R&B, I've never been a big fan of contemporary bands content simply to rehash an old style, especially ones who do so consciously in matching suits. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings owe Holland, Dozier and Holland a good deal of royalties, but the band's skill and energy get them a bit of a pass.

"I Learned the Hard Way," the title track from an LP released April 6, is a solid, swinging number that features Jones' trademark vocal strength and enough brass to gild a mansion.
