Martin Bisi

Two shows stand out among tonight's slate. One of them features experimental rock icon Martin Bisi at Carabar, 115 Parsons Ave. Bisi has recorded albums by the likes of Sonic Youth, Swans, Boredoms and John Zorn. Judging from last year's five-track EP "Son of a Gun", his own stuff is as wide-ranging as the Velvet Underground repertoire, with sugary sweet power pop, gloomy dirge rock and Stooges style rave-ups sharing headspace. His band includes the Dresden Dolls' Brian Viglione, The Fiery Furnaces' Bob D'Amicoand Cop Shoot Cop's Michael Kaminski. Sweetening the deal are local openers Birds of Hair (Marcy Mays and Jen Burton) and Ipps (Necropolis minus CDR dudes plus Michael O'Shaughnessy.). 9 p.m. start, and it's free.

Over at Skully's, 1151 N. High St., they're doing one of those private Jack Daniel's shows featuring Tokyo Police Club. You can't pay to see the once promising/now decent Canadian indie kids, but you gotta track down a free ticket. I'd check Magnolia Thunderpussy and other local record stores. This Is My Suitcase opens. More info on this series of shows here. Not sure when this is getting started, but most of them have been rather early affairs, so probably in the 8 p.m. range?
