Baaba Maal

Fresh off a set at Bonnaroo last weekend, Senegalese singer Baaba Maal arrives tonight at Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St. His latest, "Television", is a pretty stunning blend of traditional African folk sounds and Western pop textures. I'm particularly stirred by the electro-pop numbers, which manage to avoid all the usual pitfalls of projects like Sting's "Desert Rose" and come out sounding like futuristic ethnic music is supposed to sound boundary-expanding, yet true to the culture that birthed it. 7 p.m. doors for this show and $30 cover. Your opening act is Roots High Power Sound System.
