A completely subjective analysis of some red carpet looks at last night's Emmy Awards.

The Emmys were last night. Everyone's talking about the night's fashion, so I'm going to too. Some notes:

Overall, the looks were completely underwhelming. Where are all the risk takers (besides Alan Cummings, who wore glorified pajama pants)? Is it really that scary to potentially be the woman who inspires a Halloween costume and running national joke? Spice it up ladies. We spend lots of time and money buying magazines that rip your fashion-forward choices to shreds. Give us our money's worth.

Host Jane Lynch in not one, but four David Meister gowns. Bam.

It looked like Julianna Margulies' corset was a lampshade. Dislike.

Love that red trend. Lea Michele, Nina Dobrev (where did you come from? I will not forget you now) and Kate Winslet wore it best.

It's normal for Paz de la Huerta to look weird and possibly under the influence on red carpets. We should all learn to love it.

And my big rant goes to… Melissa McCarthy. If people should have been cheering for anything at the Emmys (besides "Modern Family" and its well-crafted message), it should have been for this actress who plays Molly on "Mike & Molly." (She repeatedly gasped "Holy smokes!" after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy if that tells you anything about how cute she is.) She beat out champs like Edie Falco, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the title. Plus-sized McCarthy has made it in an industry that is nothing if not brutal in its demands of physical excellence. I wish she had rocked that a little bit more on her big night. She looked lovely, yes, but girl just won an Emmy! I craved a little va-va-voom from those curves instead of va-va-boxy. (Shoulder pads?! Really?!) See, for example, Amber Riley from "Glee." Her glamorous, jewel-lined gown was every bit as diva as she is. McCarthy's a loveable star. I wish she had dressed like one.
