New program to collect recycling, yard waste from 227,000 households

A curbside recycling program will begin in spring 2012, Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced today alongside city and environmental officials. The program will begin on the first of five separate routes, with recyclables being collected every other week in 64-gallon blue carts. Yard waste will be collected on opposite weeks. Program costs will be included in the mayor's 2012 budget that heads Tuesday to City Council. These services will not result in additional fees to resident. Coleman expects full implementation of the program to take about a year. An education initiative is pending. "This program is affordable, efficient and long overdue," Mayor Coleman said in a release. "Until we have curbside recycling, we cannot truly call ourselves a green city."
