Apparently, Marvel's long-term hype machine payed off, because it looks like everyone assembled for "The Avengers" over the weekend.

Current estimates have "Avengers" breaking the $200 million box-office mark for the first time ever. Even if the real returns drop below that, it's far outpacing the former record holder, the final "Harry Potter," which took in $169 million over its first three days.

Sure, these numbers are pushed up by more expensive tickets for 3D showings, but it's also pretty refreshing that a big moneymaker is also a really great movie. Hats off to Joss Whedon!
