I've been devoted to public radio show "This American Life" for years (WBEZ represent!), so you can imagine how excited I was when they busted out of their radio format and into moving pictures with the television version of the show. For a moment there, just before the TAL series premiered on Showtime, Chicago seemed wallpapered (even more than usual) with billboards featuring the beautiful noggin of Ira Glass, TAL's host. Now things are getting even bigger.
"Sleepwalk With Me" is the first feature film with the touch of "This American Life" producers. The film has made it on to screens across the country at least in part because Glass has incited listeners to demand it. The film opened in New York on Aug. 24, and it's coming to Columbus this weekend.
Mike Birbiglia, a frequent TAL contributor, co-wrote and stars in this story of a standup comic who's having some problems sleeping -- and committing to his girlfriend. Ah, neurosis, sharp monologues, angst, creative types, humorous family dysfunction. It has all the hallmarks of a great TAL episode. Comedian Hannibal Buress makes an appearance! So does Ira Glass, as a wedding photographer.
Stick around after the 7 p.m. screening on Friday, Aug. 31 for a party. And bring your best Ira Glass impression -- there's a contest for soundalikes.
