Columbus is about to get noisier.
Swans and Sonic Youth toured together and shared a practice space in New York in the early '80s, when they began building two of the most influential catalogs in modern music. They are twin pillars of experimental noise rock: one dark, mechanistic and downright scary; one an enthusiastic banner carrier in alternative rock's big mainstream moment; both fitting entry points to a dark and twisted world of sound. A lot has changed since those early days. Michael Gira ended Swans in 1997, started Angels of Light, then reformed Swans in 2010 with an entirely different lineup. Meanwhile, Sonic Youth is on hiatus after a legendary three-decade run, so ace sideman Lee Ranaldo is now leading his own band across the country. Both groups will return to Columbus soon, so get excited.
First comes Lee Ranaldo Band at Ace of Cups on Saturday, May 25. Connections is opening. Ranaldo's band was rad opening for Wilco at the outdoor LC last summer, so this intimate club show could be the highlight of your Memorial Day weekend. Tickets cost $12.
Almost two months later, Swans will play The Bluestone on Wednesday, July 24. Their show at Outland in 2011 was brutal and sublime. Don't miss this one. (Not familiar? Check out this sweet Swans primer.)Tickets aren't on sale yet, but they'll cost $18 advance/$20 day of.
