So, yoga isn't my strong point.
Once upon a time I used to be really flexible and totally into it. And then I got a job and stopped going as much and now I'm about as flexible as a robot. So when I was invited to try Aerial Yoga at Yoga on High, I was apprehensive to say the least.
Oh haii! I'm not terrified or anything
I checked out the site to see what it was all about-- bad idea. On the opening page there is beautiful yoga instructor floating effortlessly on an cerulean colored ribbon, as if she is suspended in water. Piece of cake, right?
Wait, show me that again...
At right around 4 p.m., an hour and change before my scheduled class, my anxiety was through the roof. Would I fall on my face? Would I get caught upside down in the fabric/sling thing? Would everyone totally know I ate meat that day, despite recommitting to vegetarianism? Every possible embarrassing scenario that could happen went through my mind at least 100 times.
Turns out, all that worry was totally pointless.
It's sort of like a big blue womb you can swing in...
When I arrived at the class I was greeted by the instructor and staff members. They were all super friendly and helpful. The other participants varied in age and ability level. Since Yoga on High just started offering the class, nobody was a pro yet, so there was a definite atmosphere of "we're all in this together". I did get caught trying to flip over, and one of the instructors had to help me around. That was awkward as hell, but apparently I wasn't the only one, so that made me feel better.
After the class my chronic back pain (from wearing completely unrealist footwear all the time -- thanks Jeffrey Campbell) had almost completely disipated. I felt centered and calm. I've never slept so well in my life. Verdict: I'd totally do it again, only this time, without a photographer.
