It's last call at Betty's Fine Food and Spirits. For now, at least.
Columbus restaurateur Liz Lessner announced Monday via her blog that the kitschy Short North stalwart Betty's Fine Food & Spirits would close its doors at the 680 N. High St. location on July 7. But it wasn’t immediately clear in the post if she still planned to re-open Betty’s Downtown, as previously reported.
Lessner had said she planned on moving the Betty's concept to a new location at 340 E. Gay St., but that project has been stalled and a lease at that location has yet to be signed, she confirmed Monday.
"The impending opening of Chintz Room [in mid July] has been distracting," Lessner said in an email on Monday. "But we hope to reopen Betty's sometime in 2014, or spring 2015."
According to Lessner, Betty's Short North location has been on the chopping block since January when she took to her blog to address rumors about Betty's closing. In that post, Lessner cited a hefty health department fine in June 2012 and a shoddy HVAC system (among other things) as reasons for closing.
"The final piece is financial: high rent, rising food cost, high utilities due to inefficient HVAC, and other problems [are] not conducive to running a profitable business," Lessner wrote on Jan. 3.
Originally Lessner planned on closing Betty's High St. location at the end of January 2014, but the restaurant remained open.
