DeepWood Restaurant might well have the best happy hour in town...but it seems like not a lot of people take advantage of it or even know about it. For starters, a good selection of their primo beer selection--which is unparalleled in Columbus--as well as lots of their food-friendly vinos are sold at can't-go-lower retail prices. Secondly, the HH hours generously run from 3-7 (M-F). And C, the HH-only snacks veer far from the predictable.

From top to bottom: Raw tuna w/ "supremed" grapefruit segments, hearts of palm spring rolls & an exceedingly bright cranberry confit;

A huge pear, pancetta & goat cheese sandwich;

Cassoulet with great seared garlic sausage, a treasure trove of duck meat and a pile of otherwise underseasoned white beans;

An insanely rich, smoky and irresistible cauliflower, bacon & onion casserole.

After this econo-priced treat, I went home and watched the best music show on the tube: "Later...with Jools Holland (originally broadcast on the BBC, it airs on Ovation weeknights at 7pm)." What's great about it is that there are five acts taking turns playing live on a distinctive, circular stage. And not only are there no crappy and boring interviews or bogus "canned" performances but the wildly eclectic line-ups run the gamut from: the viciously exciting screech and howl of Grinderman (Nick Cave's great in-your-face project); the forever-entertaining ex-Smiths frontman Morrissey; T-Rex/New Order influenced (but wearing laughably ridiculous outfits) Goldfrapp; self-conscious oddballs like Rufus Wainwright and (Akron's own & Peter Gabriel-championed) Joseph Arthur; retro cool sophisticates like Burt Bacharach and Dr. John (old Jools usually lends these kind of acts his virtuosic jazzy/bluesy/boogie-woogie piano chops) ; one-time "next big thing" bands like Franz Fredinand & Arctic Monkeys; proto-punk poetess Patti Smith (who'll be on Fresh Air tomorrow at noon on WOSU i.e 820 am on your radio dial) ; and everything in-between, both inside and outside the box, circle, trapezoid, etc.... LOVE IT!
