This beautiful shot of a steelhead caught in one of northeast Ohio's numerous rivers came from Tim Daniel, one of our friends at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Sometimes, they get to fish for work. Sweet.

I love nothing more than looking at cool outdoor photos.

So, take this as a formal call for your outdoor pics. If you've been hunting, fishing, birding, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, climbing or caving, share your pics with Nature Notes.

Best way is to email them to me at jross@columbusalive.com. When I get a batch, I'll post them on the blog.

Thanks in advance.

Kelly's Island Poker Paddle

Columbus Outdoor Pursuits will host an interesting marriage of kayaking and cards with a trip to Kelly's Island in northern Ohio. Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, the group will leisurely paddle to five different beaches in the island state park and play cards.

The group insists that the event is not a race, but a chance to meet new friends. The trip costs $7.50 and prizes will be awarded to winners.

Granville shop offers good gear

This store appeals more to the uber-adventurous - it's specialties are alpine activities, climbing and high-end camping gear. But they have regular sales, with good deals on outerwear, snowshoes (let's hope there's snow this year) and other items to make your time outside more enjoyable.

The website is easy to use and offers gear for casual weekend warriors as well. Shipping deals are also quite common, which is always nice for tents and other larger items.
