New trail system to open in Montgomery County

Five Rivers Outdoors, the outdoor-adventure arm of the Dayton MetroParks, will celebrate the grand opening of its new 8.3-mile trail system at Huffman this Saturday, September 15, at 11 a.m.

Spoke Junkies, a local group of bikers, welcomes riders of all skill levels for a group trek at Huffman starting Saturday at 1 p.m. For those who've never ridden with the Junkies, it's simple. Bikers meet. Rides are tuned. Groups form according to experience, so no one's left behind.

I spoke with Greg Brumitt, an employee of Five Rivers, and he was really jazzed about the local government's interest in bringing people to nature via adventure sports. (That's a lot of what I try to do, you know.) The group plans to expand the mountain trails, add a backpacking loop and develop a whitewater park.

Hats off to them.

Bike-powered generator movie series

Gene Felice and Nathan Ober, two local eco-conscious bikers, wil show Pee-wee's Big Adventure Thursday, September 20, at Downtown hotspot Tip Top Kitchen and Cocktails. That's cool in itself, but they don't plan to use electricity from those big, bad utility companies.

Instead, they've developed a machine that converts pedal power into battery power. It's strenuous pedaling, so head there and help them out.
