Artist: Silverchair Track: "Staright Lines" Album: Young Modern Listen

Like many rock writers giving the Aussie trio another chance, I'm a lapsed Silverchair fan: Frog Stomp was an enormous part of my life in middle school, and their latest album has me curious about what's happened to the prodigies since the mid '90s.

Apparently, they've quit their fascination with big riffs, distortion and the ethical boundaries of grunge. Young Modern is a deep, triumphant record filled with soaring, poppy things that grunge bands would never have touched.

I'm not sure I love this record, but I continue to be awed by the transition of one of my favorite groups, who were talented slackers back then and now are just talented.

They group's coming to the Newport Music Hall on December 7. Check the "Headliners" spot in that week's Alive! for a full feature.
