Artist: Burial Track: "Archangel" Album: Untrue Listen

Like found art, dub involves recreating music from found objects. In Jamaica during the late 1960s, producers in charge of sound systems and in need of a constant stream of hits would rearrange, remix, cut, chop, screw and otherwise alter a current hit into something else entirely.

Burial, part of the United Kingdom's Hyperdub family, does this and more with denser, more eclectic soundscapes. Meanwhile, he evokes the deep, dark spaces of trance and the soft edges of ambient music; everything compiled here pulses and breathes with a life of its own.

This week, I've trying to catch up on my year-end listening. If I've missed anything important, please let me know. Email jross@columbusalive.com. Thanks in advance.
