Last night I drove to Chester, my hometown, to cover the 2008 Ohio Sled Dog Classic, but the state's only annual dog-sledding race has been canceled. Sucks for me and the two readers who were looking forward to live coverage from Punderson State Park this Saturday and Sunday.

No official reason was listed for the cancellation, but the freezing rain received several days ago by Northeast Ohio probably had something to do with it. Frisbee sessions with my dog earlier did not go well, as Barkley kept breaking through a frozen crust to softer snow beneath. This made for some ungainly catch.

Hopefully, I'll get to cover the event next year. Or maybe I'll pony up for the Iditarod. Look for a column on birding in next week's Alive!.

I'll see you Monday.
