Artist: Mariee Sioux Track: "Two Tongues" Album: Faces in the Rocks Listen

Neither Joni Mitchell nor Nick Drake -- Mariee Sioux's closest counterparts in mainstream pop music -- dealt much with the pain, suffering or history of American Indians. That's what makes her music so powerful: Beautiful techniques and compelling vocals softly blaring messages of betrayal, identity loss and cultural trauma. She does in whispers and croons what most can't do from a mountaintop. I don't delve too far into world music, but now I think I should. This track and "Friendboats," also from her 2007 release, are among the best tracks I've heard in months.

[Another great review]
