Artist: Counting Crows Track: "1492" Album: Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings Listen
The title of the new disc from Counting Crows references a common musicological term used to describe the differences and connections between blues and gospel, sin and repentance, joy and sadness and, ultimately, between the devil and God in black music. These wildly fascinating contradictions have always informed Adam Duritz's song persona -- dualities often heard in a single track -- and this bi-polar wrestling match has led to what many are calling his best work in years. I haven't gotten to listen to the entire record, but what I've heard is stellar. Duritz remains a master storyteller, and the crisp alt-rock always around it rings as true as ever.
