Artist: Blueprint Track: "Don't Make Me Laugh" Album: Blueprint vs. Funkadelic [Download album]

Local emceee Blueprint has been known as much for supporting the Ohio hip-hop scene as for creating great music by himself, with his Weightless Records crew and as part of Soul Position. This time around, he's created an album-long homage to the early work of the great Funkadelic, one half of George Clinton's genius.

It's a perfect fit: Killer soul riffs and spacey, futuristic meandering coupled with Print's emphatic, thoughtful delivery.

Funkadelic's first three records, Free Your Mind..., Funkadelic and Maggot Brain, have been sampled endlessly in hip-hop. Print, however, manages to bring forgotten tidbits into the mix and, alternately, finds a way to freshen up these heavily layered tracks with new takes on familiar found treasures.

"Don't Make Me Laugh" cuts up a Bernie Worrell fuzz riff buried in "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow" and smooths out one of Funkadelic's characteristic cosmic slops into a hard-driving party banger.

Blueprint is allowing fans to download the entire album for free at the above link. About 500 hard copies, complete with a poster and insturmental versions, are available at Weightless.net.
