Great weather and just the right amount of rain during the past several weeks had the Scioto River heating up for bass and panfish angling. I spoke with a couple gents just south of Griggs Reservoir, and they mentioned lots of catfish and crappie.

Me, I was out for bass -- and had plenty of luck on Friday evening. Smallmouth and rock bass were taking medium-sized gray and green Clauser minnows fished about six to 12 inches deep and then bounced along the bottom in rocky sections. Along the west bank of the river, riffles and shallow pools seemed to be holding pretty good populations. Around 8 p.m., top-water poppers like Sneaky Petes started working as well.

In other outdoors news: Got the chance to hike with Mary Reed, author of great guidebook Hiking Ohio. She's got a new outdoor website in the works. Looks fantastic so far. [Homepage] The Cleveland Indians might not be reason enough to stay up late watching SportsTime Ohio. But Outdoors Ohio is. The great show featuring long-time outdoor columnist D'Arcy Egan covers all the wonderful adventures awaiting Buckeye citizens. It airs Tuesday, usually after the Tribe game.
