Got word from my friend about a sweet little nature preserve down in Southwestern Ohio, and it looks worth a trip from Columbus.

The Highland Nature Sanctuary is the headquarters of the Arc of Appalachia Preserve System, a 90-mile crescent of land bordered on the east by the Great Scioto River and on the south by the Ohio River. There look to be numerous small lodgings and outdoor centers within the system for hiking, photography and other venturing.

At Highland, located in Bainbridge (the southerly one, not the Geauga County one), activists have preserved forest land and wildlife habitat and hold regular workshops and seminars on the outdoors. Because of the small staff, permits or reservations are required for most activities. Be sure to call ahead.
