Artist: Brendan Canning Track: "All the Best Wooden Toys" Album: Something for All of Us Listen

To some music writers of this generation, my unfamiliarity with the loose collective of great Canadian bands that revolved around (or at least near) Broken Social Scene is my fatal flaw, the equivalent of an outdoors writer who's never been hiking. Not even my stock excuse -- I was busy hunting down unreleased Guess Who b-sides when they got into indie rock -- will suffice.

Late as I am to knowledge of this scene, I've found the solo offering from Brendan Canning, one of BSS's two core members, to be very enjoyable. Canning proves himself an accomplished songwriter, a voracious consumer of different sounds and savvy enough to try lots of sounds without wandering too far. I also enjoyed "Hit the Wall" and "Snowballs and Icicles."
