Several weeks ago, a friend and I had the chance to stroll through the gardens, forests and topiary structures of Dawes Arboretum, a noted Newark nature preserve. Dawes explodes in color and aroma during warmer months, but many features are meant to be enjoyed year-round.

Conifer gardens, a cypress swap (above), beautiful white birches and numerous treasures awaited us as we slogged through trails still holding the bulk of the melted snow from earlier this month. Things should be high and dry by now. It takes about an hour to get there from Downtown, so a nice afternoon trip works the best. Bring a picnic lunch and a pair of binoculars; the birding is great.

About six miles of trails wind through the expanse, and several ponds await visitors in need of a load off. This weekend, the arboretum continues "Maple Syrup Madness," a special program dedicated to the science and succulence of everyone's favorite pancake topping. Weekly tours and demonstrations run through Saturday, March 7.
