Artist: El Jesus de Magico Track: "Unclean Ghost" Album: Unclean Ghost/Pirate Utopia 7" Listen

As you know from this blog, El Jesus de Magico can do no wrong in my book. My favorite active Columbus band has concocted a wholly intriguing, often unnerving sound that borrows from The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and a host of local compatriots who manipulate noise into something haunting and beautiful at the same time.

The A-side from a single released in October through the Columbus Discount Records singles club, "Unclean Ghost" is exactly that. It's a dirty, droning lament that shifts shapes via chopped guitar chords, echoing phrases spat into the void and what I think is Tony Allman's keyboard possessed by something I'd never want to meet in an abandoned house.
