The parent company of Wonder Bread announced that it's bakery at 697 N. 4th St. will shut down on May 9 after nearly a century at that location. All of the roughly 70 employees will lose their jobs. Even for those who prefer actual grains in their bread, that doughy smell wafting from the brick building was a small pleasure when driving on an otherwise bleak stretch of Italian Village.

"While closing bakeries is always a difficult decision to make, it's important that we continue to shape our business to meet the demands of the marketplace," Craig Jung, Interstate Bakeries Corp. chief executive, said in a statement. "We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our talented employees and their families."
