Something of an oddball group who thrived on apparent contradictions -- a black dude fronting an Irish rock band, doing '70s hard-rock covers of traditional folk songs -- Thin Lizzy put out some of the best singles of the decade. Except for Jailbreak, their albums aren't consistently solid. You can love them for song like "The Boys Are Back in Town," "Cowboy Song" and this gem.

You might hear "Whiskey in the Jar" this weekend -- but not like this. The twin-guitar attack, killer lead riff and frontman Phil Lynott's desperate, working-class wail make it the definitive recording.

Irish music with less distortion but equal oomph will be heard throughout Central Ohio through Tuesday. Check out the story about the strong traditional Irish scene in this week's Alive. I've also got a rundown of traditional instruments in there.
