Readers of this blog know that Phase 1, the intermediate mountain biking loop at Alum Creek State Park, has become one of my favorite trails. It's six miles and challenging without being too intimidating. I might fall once or twice, but I keep going back.

Those who want to make the jump to Phase 2, the advanced section further up the road, sometimes don't know how they'll fare. Many experienced mountain bikers claim that Phase 2 is actually easier riding -- except for serious technical elements like drops, rollovers and jumps.

If you're looking to step up, check out the Alum Creek's terrain area, located across the street from the Phase 1 trail head. Allowing you to practice tech skills without too much risk, it's got log piles, drops, bridges and other features you'll encounter on more extreme treks.

My buddy TJ and I rode it Sunday and had a blast. Check maps, videos and more about Alum Creek trails here.
