Koufax plays the sort of mid-tempo, melodic rock that gets swept under the "indie" umbrella, though in another time it would have been called college rock.

Robert Suchan's band has certainly embodied the collegiate spirit, whether by pimping literary faves through the Koufax book club, blogging about sanity-saving Bob Dylan interviews on 60 Minutes or spending time abroad - specifically, Suchan shacks up in Prague from time to time, though he's known to haunt Lawrence, Kansas, and the Toledo/Detroit area when he's not touring.

What else is collegiate about Koufax? Oh yes, the band is known to spend its nights drinking beer and performing rock songs in music-friendly watering holes. The latest such establishment is Rumba Cafe, where Koufax will stop Saturday to hype the forthcoming release of their fourth LP, Strugglers.

If sassy, brassy lead single "Any Moment Now" is any indication, the new album should be as swell as 2005's Hard Times Are in Fashion. At the least it bodes for a rollicking night at Rumba, and lord knows you had better be rollicking if you're going to follow Two Cow Garage. The local powerhouse will open Saturday's show, which runs from 7-10 p.m. to account for another concert later that evening.
