Pirate has seemingly been everywhere this year, but the fans at those frequent shows haven't had much to take home with them until now. The locals celebrate the release of their first proper LP, 4041, Wednesday at Skully's. It's an icy-cold collection of accessible art rock in the post-Radiohead tradition - like Bloc Party, had they sharpened their jagged edges rather than shaving them off. Atop the airtight rhythms, Dan Francis cuts loose with frantic melodies that test the limits of his vocal range, an approach that's killer on rockers like "Fever the Fever" and "Oh My God" but mars the minimal melancholy of "Sooner Than Later." But that's a minor complaint about one of 2008's best local albums.
