Meet Byrne's Pub mixologist Gary Demshar
Neighborhood: Upper Arlington
Years behind the bar: 13
What do you like most about bartending?
Coming to work, it's not like coming to work. It's like coming and hanging out with friends.
How did you get into it?
They put me to work on a St. Patrick's Day, and that was, yeah, 13 years ago.
I didn't know that was a resume-builder - "I drink a lot at your bar." Here, that's good.
Is it hard to learn?
I bar-backed at Hoster's - I started when I was 18 or 19 - so I had a little bit of a grasp. When I finally got thrown into the fire, I thought I knew it all, and I didn't know anything. You learn as you go. You make it up if you have to.
What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't bartending?
I don't know. Sitting on a beach somewhere. I guess someday I'll have to decide.
What do you like to drink?
Usually High Life and Jager. Either that or Ketel on the rocks, if I'm out at a little nicer place.
Where do you like to go to relax?
Do you have any special tricks for treating a hangover?
Chicken soup works for me. A bullion cube in hot water.
What do you like to listen to when you're bartending?
Drinking-wise, anything by Tom Waits.
What else do you like to do?
I golf. I'm a huge Browns fan, so wintertime, it's Browns. It's painful.
