4. "Heavenly Creatures" (1994)

It begins with the manic high of two young girls finding in each other the ultimate BFF, but once their parents see the downside to obsessive girl-girl relationships and increasing absorption in a violent fantasy world, the angst level shoots through the stratosphere and finally draws blood. Co-writer-director Peter Jackson adds extraordinary detail with creations from the Weta Workshop, but what makes this Oscar-nominated true crime story so formidable is his empathy for the girls' isolated, imaginative and romantic worldview, plus full-tilt performances by then-unknowns Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey.

Angst-ometer rating: 9
