8. "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955)
From the great Nicholas Ray comes the godfather of angst-filled misunderstood teen movies, which launched countless emotion-filled rants and marked the high point of James Dean's short, meteoric career (he fatally totaled his Porsche Spider a month before its release). The angst-ometer reading below reflects not just the film itself (as the trailer promises, it features performances that "will throb deep in your heart") but the fact that all three of its young co-stars - Dean, Natalie Wood and the underappreciated Sal Mineo - died tragically before their time.
