10. "The Breakfast Club" (1985)

A Whitman's Sampler of teenage angst, John Hughes' seminal high school flick goes for breadth rather than depth. It covers the problems specific to the jock, the brain, the wasteoid, the princess and the weirdo and, in just one Saturday detention session, gets them all to reach common ground with enough time left over for Molly Ringwald to make out with Judd Nelson and give Ally Sheedy a makeover. Now that's a productive weekend.

Sample quote: "You know what I got for Christmas? Oh, it was a banner f---ing year at the old Bender family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said, 'Hey, smoke up, Johnny!'"
