Female winemakers are easy to find if you look, she said. She's met plenty of them and had several conduct tastings in her shop - including Elena Walch, whose pinot grigio is featured below.

Many female-owned wineries are named after the women who run them, which makes it easier for interested shoppers to track down bottles. And lots do their part to give back, too, like Working Women Wines, who donates a portion of their sales to charity. -Brittany Kress

Elena Walch pinot grigio (2007)

Region: Alto Adige, Italy

Cost: $19

Flavors: Elegant fruit tastes in a full-bodied, rich wine

Pairs well with: Light grilled chicken, salmon or Nicoise salad

Cheryl Sher's advice: "She's an architect-turned-winemaker, and we had many great discussions about running a business in our respective countries. Her husband's family were the winemakers, and now she makes more expensive wines than her husband."

Crios de Susana Balbo syrah-bonarda (2006)

Region: Mendoza, California

Cost: $18

Flavors: Spicy and smooth, with dark fruits like plums and figs

Pairs well with: Smoky black bean burgers and roasted plum tomatoes

Cheryl Sher's advice: "She's in South America. 'Crios' means 'offspring,' and [the label depicts] her child's handprint inside hers. She says that like her own crios, a boy and a girl, this wine is extremely lovable and fun to be around."

Working Girl Wines Go Girl Red (non-vintage)

Region: Columbia Valley, Washington

Cost: $10

Flavors: Fresh and fruit-forward, with bright cherry notes; can take a slight chill

Pairs well with: Manhattan clam chowder or a spinach salad with cantaloupe, berries and chicken

Cheryl Sher's advice: "These are just fun, inexpensive, working-girl wines. They're owned and operated by three female entrepreneurs on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington."
