How did you get into bartending?

I was looking for a job and a friend of mine was bartending. He got me in the door and introduced me to everybody. I was only going to do it temporarily, but ended up liking it and stuck with it ever since.

Is there anything different about working at a gay bar?

It's pretty much the same, maybe a little different. Gay bars aren't as intense. There are arguments and scuffles more often at other bars. This has more of a friendly feel.

What do you like about bartending?

I get to meet new people and play around with everybody, and that's always fun. I seem to have more fun when I'm working. It's just more laid-back. And, I'm more of a night person and I don't do much of the day stuff.

What do you like to do when you're not bartending?

I go out to lunch a lot and see movies during the day. I like science-fiction or action films.

What bars do you like to go to when you're not at work?

Usually, I just go out two nights a week, so a lot of the time I go to A.W.O.L. on Mondays and Pyramid on Wednesday nights. The karaoke night at A.W.O.L. on Mondays really gets the crowd going.

Do you sing?

No, I'm not much of a singer. I wish I was.

What do you like to drink?

I drink beer for the most part. My favorite shot is the honey-flavored Wild Turkey. I do a lot of those. It's pretty good stuff. You tell people that and they say, "I can't do Wild Turkey." Well, it's honey-flavored, and once they get a little sip then they like it.

What would you be doing if you weren't bartending?

I'm not really sure. I've done this for a long time, so I've never really given that much thought. Someday I'd like to own my own bar. I know the business a little bit and it's something I feel real comfortable with. I'd probably still bartend a little.
