What makes a good bartender?

You have to take a little pride in it. I think the better bartenders treat it more than just an envelope of money. I always said it's like hosting a party and everyone who is coming in is your guest, and you always want to make sure everyone is having a good time and enjoying themselves.

What do you like about bartending?

I've tried the nine-to-five, and sitting in the cubicle all day long drove me crazy. I like to be out and about, but if I'm not I have to be constantly talking to people.

What do you dislike about bartending?

The risk and reward for the money. You can make a lot of money in a different, nontraditional way, but at the same time you're not guaranteed a paycheck.

Do you have to budget a little differently?

It has taken me years to figure that out. You can get in the bad habit of getting off work every day with a nice stack of money in your pocket and thinking, "I can go out tonight and spend this because I'll work tomorrow and make more money."

Then again, it is nice if you do need money. Say my rent is due and I'm a hundred bucks short, I can pick up an extra shift and make that money.

What do you like to drink?

I like beer that tastes like beer. Give me a Budweiser and a shot of Jameson and I'm happy. I will drink anything to try it, except for Jager. I never had a bad experience; I think I just had too many Jager bombs in college. Now I can't even drink Red Bull without tasting Jager. But it sells like crazy. People love it.

What music do you like when you're working?

I like any music that gives the room and the people energy. But for some reason Journey is played way too much. I love Journey, it was one of my favorite bands when I started working here. But now, Friday night is nothing but Journey. It comes on and all you hear is 12 girls screaming "that's my favorite song!" I'm like, oh no, not again.
